Four injured after driver crashes into stopped traffic on U.S. Highway 98 in Walton County

SANTA ROSA BEACH — The eastbound side of U.S. Highway 98 was shut down for nearly an hour Tuesday while the road was cleared of debris from a four-car crash that injured four people.

The crash happened at 3:07 p.m. west of County Road 395 in Walton County, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A blue Toyota Rav4 and a Toyota Tundra were stopped for traffic in the outside lane on U.S. 98 and a gray Chevrolet Suburban was stopped in the inside lane.

The driver of a white Honda CRV was traveling east in the outside lane when she failed to stop for the traffic ahead and collided with the rear of the Toyota Tundra while swerving to the left, the FHP reported.

The collision caused the front of the Tundra to hit the the back of the Rav4. The CRV veered into the inside lane, where it struck the rear the Suburban.

The driver of the Suburban, a 49-year-old man from Santa Rosa Beach, was taken to Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital to be treated for injuries, according to FHP.

Two people from Milton, a 61-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, and a 71-year-old woman from Santa Rosa Beach suffered minor injuries and are expected to make full recoveries.

Multiple witnesses stayed at the scene to aid FHP troopers in their investigation. First responders spent about an hour clearing the road of debris, vehicle fluids and many vehicle parts.

The driver of the CRV was cited for the crash.
