Four local schools participated in NorCal playoffs. Here’s how they did

Four teams, four wins.

Every Stanislaus District NorCal Baseball and Softball Regional Championships qualifier earned a victory in their respective first-round games.

Central Catholic’s baseball and softball teams earned trips to the single-elimination postseason tournament in Division III. Ripon Christian baseball advanced in Division V and Orestimba softball qualified in Division IV.

In the Sac-Joaquin Section, Divisions I, II and III sent the section champion and runner-up, while Divisions IV, V, VI and VII sent just the section champion to the NorCal playoffs that return for a second season.

Three teams hosted games Tuesday afternoon as No. 1 Ripon Christian and both Central Catholic squads, which each earned No. 2 seeds, welcomed section champions from around Northern California.

The postseason continues Thursday afternoon with Regional Semifinal games. NorCal Finals are Saturday, June 3, at host sites.

Here is how each Stanislaus District team did Tuesday.

Baseball Division III

Central Catholic 10, Colusa 4 — Braxton Thomas pulled a two-run home run over the newly built right field fence at Central Catholic High School as the Raiders won their NorCal Division III Regional Championship opener against Colusa. Thomas, who will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall, leads the state with 14 homers and is 12th in the nation with at least one more game to play.

The second-seed Raiders (22-8-1) jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after three innings sparked by four doubles and five singles. The RedHawks (26-4-1) scored their first run in the top of the fourth inning and added two in the sixth and one more in the seventh, but the day belonged to the home team’s offense.

Central Catholic, which won the Division III section title last week, scored 10 runs on 11 hits and added its two final insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Adrian Garcia got the start and the win, going four innings and striking out five batters. Wesley Payne and Joseph Salacup also pitched in relief.

The Raiders host No. 6 Arcata, which upset third-seed Chico in the first round.

Baseball Division V

Ripon Christian 15, Firebaugh 7 — The Knights scored four or more runs in back-to-back innings for the second straight game in Tuesday’s NorCal Division V opener. Top-seeded Ripon Christian (23-7) struck first, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, but after four frames trailed No. 8 Firebaugh (17-17) of the Central Section 7-4.

The Knights offense once again exploded in the late innings, plating four runs in the bottom of the fifth and seven in the sixth to take the lead and coast to a first-round victory. Grant Sonke spearheaded the Knights’ comeback, driving in three runs with the bases-loaded double in the fifth and then a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The senior finished with just two hits but drove in six runs, walked once and stole a base. Luke Crivello, Eli Terpsma and Micah English split pitching duties, striking out eight total batters and giving up six hits.

Ripon Christian has scored 10 or more runs in four of its last five wins. The Knights picked up their fourth straight victory.

The Southern League and Sac-Joaquin Section Division VII champions, Ripon Christian hosts No. 5 Lowell (16-10), which upset fourth-seed Skyline 3-0 Thursday.

Softball Division III

Central Catholic 3, Madera 0 — Leadoff hitter Jazmarie Roberts led the game with a pair of hits, and senior Jazzelyn Rios, who will play for Southeastern Oklahoma State University next spring, added a single for the Raiders’ three hits in the Division III NorCal playoff opener. The No. 2 seed, Central Catholic (28-4) bounced back from a heartbreaking shutout loss in the section championship, scoring in the bottom of the first, third and fifth innings en route to victory.

Cal Berkeley-bound pitcher Randi Roelling gave up three hits to the seventh-seed Coyotes (19-8-1) but struck out 14 batters to earn her 19th win and 15th shutout victory this season.

The Raiders, winners of the ultra-competitive Valley Oak League, will host No. 3 Pleasant Valley of Chico (19-7). The Vikings won the Eastern Athletic League and are riding a 12-game winning streak heading into Thursday’s Regional Semifinal. They won the Northern Section Division III title last week.

Softball Division IV

Orestimba 8, St. Helena 0 — Orestimba’s best season in years continued with a shutout road win. After claiming the program’s fifth overall section title and first since 2008, the Warriors (24-4) dominated the Saints (23-5). After scoring twice in the first inning, Orestimba waited until the very end to break the game open. The Warriors scored two runs in the sixth inning and added four more insurance runs in the seventh, keeping their season alive.

Simpson University-bound Jacquelyn Lujan gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out 12 batters. She also added a two-RBI double at the plate. Belany Martens had a team-high three hits with a double and led the Warriors with five RBI. Joslyn Sotelo added a pair of hits with a triple.

Orestimba has won 16 straight games dating back to mid-April and is in the midst of a playoff run that included a massive upset of the section’s top seed, Sutter, in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V semifinals. The Warriors travel to top-seeded University Prep of Redding (26-5) on Thursday.
