Four local students receive Timken scholarships

JACKSON TWP. ― The Timken Co. has awarded $540,000 in scholarships to 20 children of Timken employees in the United States, China, India, Canada, France and the Netherlands.

There were four local recipients of the Timken Global Scholars Program, which has awarded more than $26 million to 835 students since it began in 1958.

"We are committed to investing in the next generation of students, leaders and innovators so they can make contributions that will move their communities – and our world – forward," Timken Chairman John M. Timken Jr. said in a prepared statement. "The Timken Global Scholars Program is one way we support stronger communities and recognize the achievements of employees and their exceptional students."

Aiden Byers, a senior at Green High School, won the Henry Timken Scholar Award for $25,000 a year for up to three years. He plans to study biomedical engineering or pre-med at the Ohio State University or the University of Akron, according to a news release.

Byers is captain of the varsity swim team and a member of the school band, in which he's held multiple leadership positions. He also volunteers at the local YMCA.

Austin Beck, of Louisville High School, and Edgar San Jose Jr., of Green High School, both received $10,000 a year for up to three years. Beck will study digital marketing at Baldwin Wallace University, and San Jose intends to double-major in economics and statistics or public administration.

Carleigh Culver, an undergraduate architecture student at Kent State University, earned a $10,000 one-time scholarship. She plans to pursue a master's degree, according to the release.
