Four new Mansfield firefighters sworn in Monday
Four new Mansfield firefighters Monday were sworn in during a 9 a.m. ceremony outside Station 1 at 140 E. Third St., with a large crowd of family, colleagues and city officials in attendance.
Joining the Mansfield Fire Department are Bailey Damron, Colin Dawson, Kyler Roberts and Tyrell White.
Damron, 21, a Marengo native, is a 2020 graduate of Highland High School. He formerly worked at Big Walnut Joint Fire District.
"I like the challenge, camaraderie, of being a unit, working as a team," he said of the profession.
Roberts, 22, of Mansfield, is a 2019 graduate of Crestview High School.
He said he wanted to pursue this career because he likes helping people.
"I decided this would be the route," said Roberts. He has worked part time at UPS and writes medieval fantasy books.
He is engaged to be married to Alivia Channing.
Dawson, 19, a Columbus native, graduated from Bishop Watterson High School.
His father Chris is a firefighter with the city of Worthington Fire Department.
"I grew up in the fire house," he said. "It's a really good career."
White, 28, originally of Mansfield and now of Norwalk, said he is looking forward to a change of pace and caring for his city. He is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a 2013 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School.
He is engaged to be married to Katie Bundschuh and he has a stepdaughter, Kali Bandschuh, and a daughter Kylee White.
Mansfield fire Chief Steve Strickling said the four new firefighters will bring the department to 94 temporarily as someone is retiring Aug. 4.
