California-based ice cream chain Baskin-Robbins is planning to open four more stores in Johnson County over the next few years.

A franchise group is looking to start in either Olathe or Lenexa and hopes to have its first location picked out by March, said Realtor Pam Peterson, who represents Baskin-Robbins.

From there, it hopes to open a new store each year “or sooner,” Peterson said.

There are currently 10 Baskin-Robbins locations in the Kansas City area (four in Johnson County), including ones in Mission at 5425 Johnson Drive and Overland Park at 11528 W. 95th St.

The chain, offering flavors like apple cider doughnut and German chocolate cake, is shifting its focus to open more drive-thru locations. Peterson said the Johnson County locations would likely be drive-thru stores, too.

Founded in 1945 by Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins, the chain boasts of over 2,400 locations across the United States.

In 2020, Baskin-Robbins was purchased by Inspire Brands, which also owns Dunkin’ Donuts, Sonic and Jimmy John’s.

“Inspire is really gearing up to get more locations open,” Peterson said.

At the end of December, Baskin-Robbins will open a spot in Lawrence at 1626 W. 23rd St.
