Four people critically injured in high-speed, wrong-way crash in Kansas City’s Swope Park

Four people were critically injured when a driver traveling at high speeds in the wrong lane crashed into three other vehicles in Kansas City’s Swope Park, a police spokesman said.

The crash occurred about 6:10 p.m. Saturday at Gregory Boulevard and Swope Memorial Drive, said Capt. Corey Carlisle, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department. Investigators are looking into whether the driver was driving under the influence at the time of the crash.

According to the preliminary investigation, a driver of a black Chrysler 300 was headed west in the eastbound lanes of Gregory at a “very high rate of speed,” Carlisle said.

The sedan crashed into a blue Volvo S40, a black Nissan Altima and a blue Ford Mustang, which were headed east on Gregory. Then, the Chrysler overturned.

The driver of the Chrysler and a juvenile passenger were critically injured in the collision and were taken to hospitals. The drivers of the Volvo and the Nissan also were taken to hospitals with critical injuries. The driver of the Ford was uninjured.

All those injured were reported to be in serious, but stable, condition at hospitals, Carlisle said.

The investigation into the crash, which includes suspected impairment, is ongoing, he said.
