Four people found dead outside beachside resort in Cancun

An investigation was underway on Tuesday after four people were found dead outside a beachside resort in the Mexican city of Cancun.

Three of the bodies were located on Monday in a lot along the Kukulkan Boulevard, according the Attorney General’s Office for Quintana Roo, the Mexican state where Cancun is located. A fourth body was discovered a short time later, hidden beneath undergrowth in the same lot.

There was no immediate information on the nationalities or identities of the victims. No names have been released.

Authorities have not yet provided the causes of death, but prosecutors said a pair of suspects were detained in connection with the killings. They did not provide additional details.

The motive also remains under investigation.

The grisly discovery comes just days after a U.S. tourist was approached by a group of men and then shot in the leg in the nearby town of Puerto Morelos. He was rushed to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

It’s still unclear why the tourist was targeted.

The recent incidents, paired with ongoing violence in the resort city, prompted officials with the U.S. State Department to issue a travel advisory for the region. It warned travelers to “exercise increased caution,” especially after dark, at Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, which have been plagued by drug gang violence in the past.
