MACKINAW TOWNSHIP — Four of the nine people involved in a four-vehicle accident Saturday evening outside of Mackinaw City were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies with the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to the four vehicle personal injury accident accident on U.S. 23 near Mary Ann Boulevard at 6 p.m. on July 30. When they arrived on scene, the deputies determined two vehicles had been stopped on U.S. 23, with one waiting to make a left hand turn after oncoming traffic had passed, when the second vehicle was rear ended by a third vehicle traveling southbound that did not stop in time.

Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont said a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup, driven by a 55-year-old man from Cheboygan, was stopped, waiting to turn into a business outside of Mackinaw City. A 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by a 22-year-old Topinabee woman, was stopped, waiting for the pickup to turn.

"A 2012 Toyota Rav4, driven by an 18-year-old Cheboygan man, was also traveling southbound and did not stop in time, and rear ended the Jeep," said Clarmont. "That sent the Jeep into the rear end of the Dodge Ram."

As a result of the crash, the Jeep Grand Cherokee also crossed the center line of U.S. 23, striking a fourth car, a 2020 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 57-year-old man from Dearborn, that was northbound.

"The Elantra left the roadway and traveled through the lawn, and into the outdoor display area of the Mackinaw Plant Center, before coming to a rest," said Clarmont. "There were nine total occupants of the vehicles and four were transported, all with non-life threatening injuries."

The driver of the Toyota Rav4 was wearing his seat belt at the time and sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash. He was transported to McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey by Cheboygan Life Support Systems ambulance, where he was treated for his injuries.

The driver and two of the passengers of the Jeep, a 20-year-old female and a 46-year-old female from Topinabee, were not injured in the accident. However, two passengers of the Jeep, a 51-year-old woman from Plainwell and a 42-year-old woman from Sturgis, were both injured in the accident. They were also transported to McLaren Northern Michigan by Cheboygan Life Support Systems ambulance, where they were treated for their injuries. Everyone in the Jeep had been wearing their seat belts.

The driver of the Dodge Ram had also been wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident and was not injured.

The driver of the Hyundai Elantra was not injured and had been wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident. His passenger, a 54-year-old female from Dearborn, sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident and was transported to Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace by Straits Area EMS of St. Ignace, where she was treated for her injuries. She also was wearing her seat belt.

This accident remains under investigation by the sheriff's department at this time. Alcohol has been ruled out as a factor in the accident.

The Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department was assisted on the scene by the Mackinaw City Police Department, Mackinaw City Fire Department, Cheboygan Life Support Systems ambulance, Emmet County EMS ambulance and Straits Area EMS of St. Ignace.
