Four people killed in Palisades Interstate Parkway crash in Englewood Cliffs

A horrific overnight crash on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Englewood Cliffs left four people dead Friday, officials said.

A shuttle van that takes people to and from factories in upstate New York overturned in the crash at about 1:30 a.m., the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police said in a statement. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene while eight others were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from severe head trauma to minor physical complaints, police said.

The identities of the victims have not been released. The Ford Ecoline cargo van had New York license plates.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

A number of agencies rushed to the scene in attempts to rescue people from the wreckage, including the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police, Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Bergen County Sheriff's Office, and police, fire and EMS from Fort Lee, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs and Tenafly.

"I thank the members of the Englewood Cliffs Fire Department, the Englewood Cliffs Police Department, first responders and all other police and fire departments responding to the accident," Mayor Mario Kranjac said in a statement. "...and I offer condolences and prayers to the families of those who died and prayers for the injured."

Gov. Phil Murphy also tweeted about the incident Friday.

"Four people lost their lives early this morning when a passenger van overturned on the Palisades Interstate Parkway," he said. "Our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the four victims, and we wish the eight people who were injured a speedy recovery."
