There are four items on the Chippewa County ballot for the upcoming Aug. 2 election.

Ambulance and fire protection proposition millage request

This proposal will permit the county to restore and continue the millage previously approved by the electors in 2018 to fund ambulance and fire protection county-wide.

This is a renewal of the millage that expired with the 2021 tax levy.

The proposal asks: "Shall the expired previously voted increase in the tax limitation imposed under Article IX, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution on general ad valorem taxes within Chippewa County, Michigan of .4280 mill, which was reduced to .4275 mill by the required millage rollbacks, be reinstated at .4275 mill for four years, for the purpose of continuing to provide funds for the public services of ambulance and fire protection county-wide with the provision that the levy be disbursed in the following manner: 35% administration, training, and communications operations, and 65% to be disbursed annually pro-rata based on taxable valuations to the City of Sault Ste. Marie and the townships of Chippewa County, Michigan for the purpose of supplementing funding for existing ambulance and fire protection services?"

The estimate of the revenue the county will collect if this millage is approved and levied in 2022 is $516,166.

Recycling program proposition request

This proposal will permit the county to renew and continue the millage which was previously approved by the electors in 2018 to fund the recycling program in Chippewa County.

The proposal reads: "Shall the tax limitation imposed under Article IX, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution on all taxable real and tangible personal property in Chippewa County, Michigan, be increased by an amount not to exceed .50 mill for four years, to provide funds for the development and continued operations of the Chippewa County Recycling Program, and shall the county levy such millage for said purpose?"

The estimate of revenue the county will collect if this millage is approved and levied in 2022 is $630,000.

Pickford Public Schools operating millage renewal proposal

This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance and renews millage that will expire with the 2022 tax levy.

The renewal reads: "Shall the currently authorized millage rate limitation of 18.7529 mills on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Pickford Public Schools, Chippewa and Mackinac counties be renewed for a period of two years, to provide funds for operating purposes?"

The estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and 18 mills are levied in 2023 is approximately $686,535.

Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District special education millage proposal

The Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District is proposing a new millage to maintain current funding levels for special education students living in Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac counties.

The current .2273 millage is expiring and the EUPISD is asking voters to renew the millage and approve an additional .7500 millage. The original millage was approved by voters in 2018. If approved, the cost to homeowners with a market value of $100,000 will be $4.07 per month. For a home with a market value of $150,000, the cost would be $6.11 per month.

Funds will be utilized to provide critical services, purchase equipment, improve facilities and help transport special needs students in local school districts. This millage allows for schools to gain funding for special needs students without taking that money from their general funds.

If the millage is approved, it will generate $2.48 million annually over the next seven years for a total of $17.56 million.
