Four state champs: Cape Cod high school track stars advance to MIAA Meet of Champions

Last weekend, the MIAA Indoor Track and Field State Championships took place and athletes from across Cape Cod and the Islands showed why they're amongst the best in the state.

The Cape was represented in four of the five divisional meets and a bunch of local athletes will compete at Meet of Champions.

Division 2

Barnstable was represented on both the boys and girls sides in Division 2. Chloe Dibb won the 1,000m (2:59.64) to add 10 points to the Red Hawks team total. Lily DeDecko also scored points for the Red Hawks, claiming a seventh-place finish in the mile (5:16.78). DeDecko and Dibb, along with Sophia Murphy and Emma Steenstra, took fourth place in the 4x800m relay (10:05.99), earning four points. Overall, the girls team finished 11th. Barnstable's 4x200 team Renna Kingsbury, Sophia Morin, Caitlin Ward Prior, and Laik O'Reilly finished 24th.

Jaxson Merrill's 12th-place finish in the two mile (10:00.73) was the highest for the Barnstable boys. Casey Holland finished 16th in the 300m (37.39), and Denrick Francis, Eamon Welch-Viens, Holland and Merrill ran a 3:44.13 in the 4x400 relay finishing 20th.

Division 3

Nauset finished in the top 15 on both the boys and girls sides. The girls finished seventh overall with 22.5 total points. Madeline Mahoney contributed 10 of them by winning the 1,000m (3:01.16). Violet Roche's 41.98 placed her fourth overall in the 300m final, and tied for sixth in the high jump (4'10") and earned 6.5 points for the Warriors. Cecilia LaBarge took home fourth place (32-02.50), in the shot put to add five points to the Warriors collective tally. Rihanna Sutherland finished ninth in the 300m (42.81).

St. John Paul II's Aniela Gallagher took eighth place in the high jump.

Aidan Brown's second-place (7.90) finish in the 55m hurdles earned half of the Warriors total points on the day. The other half came from Damian Bebber's second-place finish in the 600m (1:24.68). Bebber also finished 15th in the 300m, and Paytah Dill took 19th in the 600m.

Division 4

Falmouth's Henry Gartner won the two mile (9:45.35) to score 10 points for the Clippers, who finished 12th in Division 4. Silas Gartner finished just under 18 seconds behind him (10:03.29) and took third. Jackson Mahoney's seventh-place finish in the high jump also registered a point for the Clippers. Mahoney also finished 15th in the long jump. The Clippers 4x400m relay team: Ian Maksym, Joe Simpkins, Keegan Hefferen, Ronald Stone, finished 10th (3:43.98).

Division 5

The Dennis-Yarmouth girls team were the highest overall local finishers in Division 5. The Dolphins finished seventh with 21 points and were led by Breanna Braham, and Rose Karow. Braham finished third in the 55m hurdles (7.45), and fourth in the 300m (42.55). Karow took second in the 600m (1:41.00), and was the opening leg of the 4x800 team that took seventh (11:01.57), along with Madeline Webber, Megan McDowell, and Maddie Edwards.

Camille Brand won the girls high jump (5'2") for Martha's Vineyard, helping the Vineyarders finish 11th overall. Adrienne Christy finished second overall in the two mile (11:44.43) to register eight points. Madison Mello finished 10th in the shot put (30-10.60), and the 4x200m relay team (Shantavia Whylly, Caroline Bettencourt, Brand, and Eloise Christy) took 14th.

Martha's Vineyard's Daniel Serpa finished 4th (2:36.64) in the 1000m final, tallying the Vineyarders only points on the day. They finished 27th overall.

Moving On

Ultimately, the Cape and Islands League will have a few representatives at this weekend's Meet of Champions at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

On the boys side, Falmouth's Henry Gartner and Silas Gartner will compete in the two mile, and Mahoney will compete in the high jump. They will be joined by Martha's Vineyard's Serpa, who qualified in the 1,000m. Nauset's Brown and Bebber qualified in the 55m hurdles and 600m, respectively.

DeDecko, Dibb, and the 4x800 relay team (Sophia Murphy, DeDecko, Dibb, and Emma Steenstra) all will represent the Red Hawks at All-States.. Braham and Karow will represent the Dolphins in the 55m hurdles and 600m. Brand and Christy will each represent Martha's Vineyard, and Madeline Mahoney and Violet Roche will be the Warriors representatives.
