Four! Stefanie Mitchell cruises to fourth Women's All-City golf title

GALESBURG — Stefanie Mitchell led wire-to-wire in the 50th edition of the Galesburg Women's All-City Golf Tournament.

Mitchell opened play with a 72 on Tuesday at Bunker Links Golf Course, and she followed it up with a 76 Wednesday at Lake Bracken Country Club for a 148 after 36 holes of action and an eight stroke lead. In Friday's final round at Soangetaha Country Club, Mitchell shot a 73 for a 221 across 54 holes, and she secured a 13-stroke victory over Trisha Blake-Millar.

"I played really well considering how much I play," Mitchell said. "Once I got out on the course, there were a few shots I left out there. I had a couple nervous shots and a couple I don't play very much shots but other than that I think overall I played pretty good."

Mitchell is now a four-time Women's All-City winner. Her first victory in the event came in 1994 and it was heading into her senior year of high school. Mitchell finished atop the field again in 1995.

"When you're young, you just go out and expect it but the older you get it's not something you're going to go out and automatically win," said Mitchell, 45, who also won the All-City crown in 2012. "When you're younger you have all the confidence in the world. It's better to win when you're older, you appreciate it more, and you're just happy to wake up and be able to swing that day."

Blake-Millar finished in second place with a 234, and she's content with that fact, as Blake-Millar has only hit the links about 13 times so far in 2022.

"I don't think any of us played our best," said Blake-Millar, who has two All-City wins under her belt. "None of us played the way we expected to play.

"I know my goal is always to break 80 and that went out the first day," added Blake-Millar, who shot an 81 at Bunker Links in the first round.

Cheri Hosteng took third overall with a 244 but finished atop the senior division with a 166. Gail Hannam (168) was two strokes behind Hosteng in the senior field, and Hannam ended up fourth overall with a 250.

Hannam has claimed two Women’s All-City titles (1996 and 2010) and played in the tourney since it began in 1972. She won both the overall tourney title and Senior crown in 2010, and Hannam has won the Senior All-City 11 times.

Hosteng has won the overall Women's All-City title on 11 occasions, and it's her first Senior win. This is only the second summer Hosteng has been eligible to compete in that portion of the field.

"I feel really good about getting the win," Hosteng said. "I don't think I played my best today or on Tuesday. I played good the middle round but that didn't count. I finished strong today, which was good. I wasn't expecting to win the overall title knowing that Stef and Trish were in it.

"I just want to play respectable golf. My goal is to get three rounds in the 70s, and I only got one round in the 70s this year. If I can get three rounds in the 70s then I'm happy," Hosteng added. "I had a bad front 9 today but I had a really good back 9. I had three birdies on the back and a double on 18."

Women of all ages have always competed in the Women's All-City, but in 1997 a senior division was added to the tourney. Those who are 55 and older are able to golf in the first and final round with the chance to claim a title.
