Four stores in St. Louis region expected to close due to Bed Bath & Beyond bankruptcy

Well, good readers, you may have heard that Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. filed for bankruptcy over the weekend.

The company announced the filing of voluntary Chapter 11 petitions in an April 23 press release. Bloomberg News, citing court documents, said the company expects to gradually close all of its properties by June 30.

“The Company’s 360 Bed Bath & Beyond and 120 buybuy BABY stores and websites will remain open and continue serving customers as the Company begins its efforts to effectuate the closure of its retail locations,” stated the release.

The release stated that the company “intends to uphold its commitments to customers, employees, and partners” and will continue to pay employees’ wages and benefits, honor vendor obligations and maintain customer programs.

“Millions of customers have trusted us through the most important milestones in their lives – from going to college to getting married, settling into a new home to having a baby,” Sue Gove, President & CEO of Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., stated in the release.

“Our teams have worked with incredible purpose to support and strengthen our beloved banners, Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy BABY. We deeply appreciate our associates, customers, partners, and the communities we serve, and we remain steadfastly determined to serve them throughout this process. We will continue working diligently to maximize value for the benefit of all stakeholders.”

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. started a liquidation sale, so there’s still time to shop.

I searched for locations within a 100-mile radius of Belleville and came up with a handful of stores.

Bed Bath & Beyond:

  • 141 Highland Boulevard Drive, Manchester, Missouri

  • 281 Mid Rivers Mall Drive, Saint Peters, Missouri

  • 3251 S. Veterans Parkway, Springfield, Illinois

buybuy Baby:

  • 3200 Laclede Station, Suite D, St. Louis, Missouri

  • 15355A Manchester Road, Ballwin, Missouri

A full list of store closings can be found on the Investor Overview page of the Bed Bath & Beyond website.

The store at at 6611 N. Illinois St. in Fairview Heights closed in January.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. announced in August that 150 Bed Bath & Beyond stores were slated to close, including the Fairview Heights location.

In September, Paul Ellis, director of Economic Development for Fairview Heights, said news of the closing wasn’t a surprise.

“We have been working with the brokers for that site” to find a new tenant, said Ellis at the time.

He said potential tenants were lined up and plans were being reviewed.

I called Ellis to see if new information was available about a possible tenant for the site, but he was not immediately available.

I’ll let you know if I learn anything new.
