Four-vehicle accident on K-96 hospitalizes 2 children, injures other people

A four-vehicle crash hospitalized a 2 and 5-year-old child and injured several others Thursday morning on K-96.

The accident was reported shortly after 8 a.m. on westbound K-96 at mile marker 291 between the Hydraulic and Hillside exits. It involved three SUVs and a four-door sedan, Kansas Highway Patrol trooper Chad Crittenden said.

Crittenden added that KHP was already at the site of a different crash at the north/south split of I-135 when traffic began to pile up on K-96, leading to the four-vehicle crash.

A woman and two children in a Nissan Rogue SUV were taken Wesley Medical Center following the crash. The 5-year-old was unresponsive and the 2-year-old was critical, Crittenden said. The woman suffered minor injuries.

An update on the children’s condition was not immediately available.

A woman in a Honda CRV suffered minor injuries. A husband and wife in a Honda Pilot along with a man in a Chevy Malibu refused treatment by Sedgwick County EMS, Crittenden said.

KHP, Wichita police, Wichita fire, Sedgwick County EMS and the Kansas Department of Transportation were on scene of the crash that was cleared by 10:30 a.m., Crittenden added.
