What happens in the fourth episode of Monsters at Work?

Friendships are about to get a lot stronger in this episode of "Monsters at Work."

In the fourth episode of Monsters at Work, we immediately encounter a familiar scenario for fans of Monsters, Inc.—Mike has paperwork he hasn’t filed. Mike is being handed paperwork to run by Roze, Roze’s sister, when Gary (who looks just like Mike, but he’s blue), wanders up. Gary is clearly a favorite of Roze’s, and gets out of filing his own paperwork when he says he’s been practicing for the Bowl-off-a-thon.

Later, Tylor and Val are sent up to repair a ball return machine at the Monsters, Incorporated bowling alley. While not working, Tylor reads a book about comedy. Both Val and Tylor are surprised to find Mike in the ball return, where he says he’s been stuck because he was trying to “be the ball.” He reveals that he’s too busy to participate in the Bowl-off-a-thon, despite his deep love of bowling. Gary emerges in the bowling alley and taunts Mike, who lies and says he’s sponsoring a team for the Bowl-off-a-thon.

Back in the MIFT office, Tylor checks in with Fritz about bowling. Henry Winkler’s Fritz isn’t necessarily the monster with the most screen time in the series, but whenever he’s in a scene he dazzles, and episode 4 is very Fritz-heavy. Fritz reveals that he’s called "No Splitz Fritz" by his friends, and notes that the rest of the MIFT employees (besides Duncan) love bowling. Eager to impress Mike, Tylor suggests that Mike sponsor a MIFT bowling team. Delighted by the idea, MIke makes a bet with Gary (the winner of the tournament will get a dinner at Harryhausen’s and has to do the other’s paperwork for a month).

The MIFT team arrives at the bowling alley, where Fritz unveils a fabulous, glittery bowling ball and the MIFT team begins to demonstrate their skills. Val, Cutter, and Fritz are all avid, but terrible, bowlers. Duncan mocks Tylor for choosing the MIFT team as his bowling squad. At the bowling tournament, Smitty and Needleman preside over the first match between the Big Wazowskis and the Sliding Slugs. Due to a technicality, the Big Wazowskis manage to win, and Mike brags about their success to Gary. In their next match against the Pinheads, the Big Wazowskis manage to win on yet another technicality.

Mike tells Tylor about the bet with Gary, and worried that Mike will realize that Tylor made a bad judgement call in choosing the MIFT employees as his team, Tylor makes a deal with the ever-sinister Duncan to bring in pro bowlers, signing a contract that says he will not actively pursue Fritz’s job in exchange for Duncan’s help. Smitty and Needleman interrupt the moment consistently, and reveal that they are part of a Fright Club. When Tylor sees Cutter, Val, and Fritz, he tells them that the last bowling match was cancelled.

The MIFT employees return to the bowling alley and are devastated to see that they’ve been replaced. However, upon witnessing Tylor’s betrayal, the replacements leave as Mike tries to prevent them from going. Distraught, Mike and Tylor realize that they don’t have a team to compete with. Fritz steps in and gives an impassioned speech (where he reveals a criminal past?) in which asks Tylor if he’s part of their team. Reunited the MIFT employees begin the game, and with Tylor’s guidance they manage to land a tie.

The episode ends with a trip to Harryhausen’s for Mike and Gary, and a short clip of Mike’s Comedy Class, in which Mike teaches some monsters about heckling, all while being heckled by Gary.
