Fourth of July, Kewaunee County: Here's where and how to celebrate and watch fireworks

Fireworks, food, fun.

Yes, it's again the weekend to remember the beginning of America with Fourth of July celebrations.

For those in Kewaunee County who want to get out, mingle with others on the lakeshore and enjoy fireworks lighting up the night sky, there's a big daylong Sunday celebration in Kewaunee and what promises to be a lit-up and loud Saturday warmup act in Algoma.

Here's the what, how and where to do it.

Algoma

While the city doesn't sponsor an official Fourth of July celebration, the public still can check out fireworks over Algoma's Lake Michigan shoreline thanks to the folks at At the Water's Edge Bed and Breakfast.

That's where Dave's 14th Annual Fireworks Show takes place at about 9:45 p.m. July 2. The public is invited to park on the side of the highway at the B&B, N7136 State 42, and bring folding chairs to sit on the front lawn and watch what Dave calls "45 minutes of continuous BOOM."

Kewaunee

The Kewaunee Area Chamber of Commerce's annual "Fireworks at the Shore" Fourth of July festivities feature music, food, public art and fireworks July 3 at and around Lakehaven Hall, 96 Ellis St.

From noon to 10:30 p.m., the locally based Muskrat City Sportsman's Club will serve hamburgers, brats and hot dogs as well as a fish fry from 3 to 9 p.m. All proceeds will go to scholarships and educational programs.

Games and other activities for children start at 3 p.m. and run through dusk. Live music is provided by local classic rock cover band MockingBird starting at 4 p.m., also until dusk.

Residents and visitors also can view the city's 10th annual Art Walk. Fourteen local artists painted banners that are going on display on light poles this week in downtown Kewaunee and will remain up through fall. The banners were judged by a panel with prizes awarded first through third places as well as two honorable mentions; the award winners can be seen on the chamber's Facebook page.

Wrapping up the celebration with a patriotic flair, a veterans tribute will be held at 8:45 p.m. at the end of Ellis Street near the hall.

That's followed at dusk by the fireworks, sponsored by Brown Fest and the chamber. Kewaunee's fireworks display is unique in that it includes a colorful "ground show" that doesn't rise far above the ground and might best be viewed from Lakehaven Hall instead of the beach on the Lake Michigan shore along with a more traditional, high-flying aerial fireworks display over the shore.
