The Kiel Municipal Band will present its annual Patriotic Concert at City Park at 7 p.m. June 29.

The concert is an area tradition that includes special music for Independence Day and a salute to military veterans.

The concert is presented in the style of the “March King,” John Philip Sousa. Sousa often began his concerts with an overture. The band will perform a piece in overture style by Clare Grundman titled “American Folk Rhapsody No. 1.” The piece is a medley of regional folk songs from the United States, including the Appalachian folk song “My Little Mohee (more commonly known as “On Top of Old Smokey”)”; the Northwoods loggers song “Shantyman’s Life”; another Appalachian song, “Sourwood Mountain”; and the gold-rush song “Sweet Betsy from Pike.”

Sousa will be well represented with the marches “U.S. Naval Reserve,” “Washington Post” and the national march “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

The popular side of American music will also be heard in “Rock, Roll and Remember,” a tribute to Dick Clark.

Deb Fett will join the band to perform a song by Sousa, “I’ve Made My Plans for the Summer.” She will also sing George M. Cohan’s “Star-Spangled Spectacular,” a collection of Cohan’s best-loved tunes, as well as Carmen Dragon’s setting of “America, the Beautiful.” Fett is a Kiel native and music teacher in Fond du Lac.

The concert will conclude with “Armed Forces Salute,” a tribute to veterans both in the audience and everywhere in the world.

Prior to the concert, starting at 4 p.m. and continuing until 7:30 p.m., St. Peter’s United Church of Christ will be hosting a picnic in the park.

The concert is free, family-friendly and open to everyone. If it rains, the concert will be at the Kiel Middle School gym.

The KMB will also appear as part of the annual Kohler American Club July 4 celebration and fireworks at Ravine Park in Kohler at 8 p.m. July 4.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers was on Lakeshore Technical College’s Cleveland campus last week to announce the college was selected to receive funding through his Workforce Innovation Grant program.

The college is receiving a $1.64 million grant to fund its Lakeshore Industry 4.0 Pathways and Upskilling initiative. The initiative addresses the pandemic-exacerbated critical labor shortage threatening the economic stability of the region, which is manufacturing-heavy.

According to a news release, the initiative will fund training and education efforts focusing on training underserved populations and upskilling current workers in automation, robotics and “Industry 4.0.”

Industry 4.0 is a term referring to a new phase in the Industrial Revolution that focuses heavily on automation, machine learning and real-time data to optimize performance.

Equipment purchases will include an additional mobile lab that will allow LTC to take training to places in the community, including homeless shelters and community resource centers, and reach underserved populations.

This “4.0 On-the-Go” training will support the need for more skilled employees, including production workers and machine operators, the news release said. There will be no cost for those obtaining the training.

The mobile lab will also be taken into area rural high schools to generate interest in manufacturing careers among younger individuals.

LTC’s “4.0 Fridays” upskill training focuses on providing current production workers and machine operators with education and training to help them better understand automatic and robotics. According to a 2022 Industry 4.0 Needs, Skills, and Talent Survey, 79% of manufacturers have invested heavily in automation and robotics over the last two years. This grant will help them overcome the career and knowledge gaps they report are preventing them from growing and prospering.

Grant activities will begin in July and end in December 2024.
