Somerset Berkley's quadruplet brothers are all graduating from high school

BERKLEY — No, it's not a case of overkill. Those four (4!) Somerset Berkley Regional High School 2023 senior signs on the Lynch front lawn in Berkley simply speak the truth. The whole truth.

Scott, Riley, Jason, Jonathan. They're all graduating seniors at SBR. They also share a birthday, Aug. 1. And based on a quick survey of present and former educators, it appears the Lynches may be the first quadruplets in Somerset High and SBR history.

Of course, in the spirit of incredible potential mischief, the next question to be answered is if the quads, as they are affectionately known, are identical. The answer is yes. And no.

Jonathan and Jason are identical. Riley and Scott are fraternal. (Older brother Devin is a 2019 SBR graduate.) In addition to schooling together, the quads also all work in town at Dough Licious Pizza, where quadruplet friction has been felt when one calls out.

The quadruplets graciously consented to do a question and answer. It's just a few paragraphs down from here.

How do the parents of quadruplets handle things?

Their parents, Chris and Karen, purchased a used Volvo for the quadruplets. Scott is the primary driver to and from school. He has the closest friendship with the car and has done considerable maintenance work on it — engine, interior, exterior. In a way, it's his baby. Because Chris also has a work vehicle, the quadruplets have some access to Dad's personal car. That certainly helps, since they aren't always going in the same direction.

Unlike in elementary and middle school, the SBR off-to-school morning routine is brief. Blink and you miss it. “They pretty much get up five minutes before they have to leave and they all run out the door,” Karen said.

No, that's not a mistake. There are four Somerset-Berkley Class of 2023 signs on the lawn of the Lynch quadruplets' house in Berkley.

Parents of quadruplets describe their personalities

The parents were asked to offer a one-word description of each of the quadruplets. Mom went with empathetic for both Jason and Jonathan, both very good pitchers on the very successful high school baseball team. “I'm going to say stubborn for Riley, and stubborn for Scott, too,” said Karen, with dad agreeing on all counts.

What's it like growing as a quadruplet?

The four boys were asked for a quick evaluation of life as a quadruplet.

“It's pretty hectic,” Scott said. “Sometimes it's good; sometimes we fight a little bit. But other than that, it's all right.”

“Stressful at times, Riley said. “Growing up, a lot of fighting. But it's been better.”

“It's a lot, but you get through it,” Jason said. “Our whole life, we've been fighting. But it's getting better. So we're good.”

“I don't know anything different, so I guess it's just normal,” Jonathan said.

And what about being a parent of quadruplets?

“It took me a while to get the names for Jason and Jon,” Chris said. “When they were little, they were very alike.”

“It's been a whirlwind,” Karen said. “I wouldn't change a thing. I really wouldn't. I can't imagine my life any different. It's been a blessing.”
