Fox Appeared to Censor the ‘Succession’ Writer’s Immigration Speech at the Emmys

To be an Emmy award winner is to walk a tightrope in your acceptance speech. Not only are you struggling to remember everyone you need to thank, but you're doing it on an incredibly public stage, and with a ticking clock, to boot. That's all before the censor comes for you, as it appeared to do for Succession writer Jesse Armstrong at tonight's ceremony.

When Armstrong took the stage to accept the statue for best writing in a drama series, the Brit noted, "Quite a lot of British winners. Maybe too many. Maybe you should have a think about those immigration restrictions." Whatever Armstrong said next, presumably a jab at Donald Trump's restrictive, xenophobic immigration policies, was lost to the enforced silence of the censor, as the broadcast bleeped the next few seconds of his remarks. Twitter was understandably aghast.

It remains unclear what, exactly, he said, but he is right. The Brits had an excellent showing at the 2019 Emmys with Fleabag having an excellent showing, along with Chernobyl. Phoebe Waller-Bridge won for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series and also for Best Comedy Series. Meanwhile, Chernobyl won for Outstanding Limited Series. Also, Donald Trump's immigration policies in the United States have been compared to concentration camps. But, in the end it's up to the audience to figure out what Armstrong was saying in his acceptance speech. This was also the second speech to be bleeped tonight during the Emmys.
