Florida Power & Light officials said an equipment failure was the cause of a widespread outage in Viera late Wednesday.

The outages — impacting businesses, homes, and traffic lights in the Central Brevard town — were reported just after 5 p.m. By 8 p.m. the company had restored power to all but about 200 customers.

"It was a feeder line that was damaged and crews are in the process of restoring it," said Shirley Ragsdale, spokeswoman for the company.

The outages came as temperatures hit the mid-80s.

Witnesses reported that several businesses closed during the outages.

"Our power just came back on," said Gina Pierce, owner of Tuscany Grill.

"Half of our hood system doesn't work and I'm pretty sure it was damaged when it tried to come back on. We lost about $11,000," she said.
