Frackville man charged after gun discharges in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, wounding him

May 24—A Frackville man accidentally shot himself in the leg in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, leading to charges against him and the person to whom the handgun was registered.

Wildwood Crest police were called to a hotel after a gun-related incident was reported at about 4:15 p.m May 18.

Officers found Alexander Wiederhold, 30, with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was treated at the scene and then taken to the Atlantic City medical center.

Police determined a handgun he was carrying in his waistband discharged while he was carrying bags to his hotel room.

The gun was registered to Sabrina Sweed, 29, who was with Wiederhold. The gun contained a high capacity magazine with hollow-point bullets, police said.

They said that at the time the gun discharged, Wiederhold was walking next to a 6-year-old child.

Neither Wiederhold nor Sweed had a concealed carry permit for the weapon, police said.

Wiederhold was charged with endangering the welfare of children, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a high capacity magazine and possession of hollow-point bullets.

Sweed was charged with possession of a high capacity magazine and possession of hollow-point bullets.

After being released from the hospital, police said, Wiederhold was placed on a warrant and lodged in Cape May County Correctional Center.

Sweed was released on a summons, police said.
