Sep. 15—Shane Bieber, the reigning American League Cy Young award winner, is making a rehab appearance with the Columbus Clippers on Tuesday night against the Toledo Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field.

Bieber has been on the injured list due to a shoulder strain since June. He will be pitching in the minor leagues for the first time since 2018.

During the shortened 2020 season, Bieber was the unanimous AL Cy Young award winner after leading the league in wins, earned-run average, and strikeouts. He became the fifth Indians pitcher to win the award.

Before his injury this season, Bieber went 7-4 with a 3.28 ERA in 14 starts.

First inning

Bieber recorded two strikeouts in the first inning of his rehab start. He struck out Riley Greene (looking) and Aderlin Rodriguez (swinging).

Mud Hens centerfielder Daz Cameron led off with a fly out to center field on the first pitch he saw from Bieber. Spencer Torkelson reached on an infield single to the shortstop.

Bieber threw 17 pitches, 11 for strikes.

Second inning

Bieber retired the first two batters he faced — Kody Clemens (ground out) and Zack Short (strikeout swinging) — to begin the second. Ryan Kreidler worked a two-out walk before Josh Lester lined out to second base.

Bieber threw 15 pitches, 11 for strikes.

Third inning

Daz Cameron doubled off Shane Bieber with one out in the third inning. With two outs, Spencer Torkelson drove in Cameron on a base hit to left field.
