STORY: France fans lucky enough to score one of just 1,000 tickets to watch their side in a friendly match on Wednesday (October 7) got more than their money's worth as they cheered them on to a 7-1 thrashing of Ukraine.
Only 1,000 fans were allowed into the 80,000-capacity Stade de France due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
France fans outside the stadium hardly seemed phased by the ongoing health crisis as they made their way into the stadium just outside Paris.
Among those in attendance were many members of supporter clubs such as "Les irrésistibles français", with some being selected by raffle.
Inside the stadium the realities of the coronavirus were present with dancing, refreshment bars and megaphones all banned; a small price to pay for diehard fans desperate to see their side on the pitch.
And making it to this match meant watching Olivier Giroud leapfrog Michel Platini to become France's second highest all-time top scorer with 42 goals. Giroud is now on the heels of Thierry Henry's all-time record of 51.
Giroud netted twice in the 7-1 demolition of Ukraine as he celebrated his 100th cap in style in front of visitors' coach Andriy Shevchenko, one of his idols.
Giroud said he would now take it step by step to improve his goal tally, although he hinted he was targeting Henry's record, which he set in 123 international appearances.
Asked whether he was going for the 51-goal mark, he said: "There's no limit. You have to set yourself goals. Let's see when I reach 46, 47 goals."
