WORCESTER — It didn’t take long for Franchy Cordero to pack his bags and head to the airport.

The WooSox outfielder was removed from Saturday’s game against the Rochester Red Wings in the fifth inning and quickly prepared to join the Boston Red Sox in time for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles as part of Major League Baseball’s Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The Red Sox need reinforcements since both first baseman Eric Hosmer and outfielder Tommy Pham are both injured. Hosmer exited Saturday’s game in Baltimore due to a lower-back injury, and Cordero was subsequently removed from the WooSox game.

“Just to go there and do the same thing I’ve been doing here the last couple of days,” Cordero said as he exited Polar Park. “I’ll contribute to the team to win games.”

Cordero has been a massive offensive threat for the WooSox of late. Prior to Saturday’s game, he went 6 for 9, including three home runs and nine RBIs over the previous two games.

Cordero was optioned to Worcester after the Red Sox acquired Hosmer at the trade deadline. In 72 games, Cordero hit .219 with 22 extra-base hits and 24 RBIs. He played 45 games at first base, 25 in right field, 9 in left field and 3 as the designated hitter.

Many wonder why Cordero was promoted and not prospect Triston Casas. The Red Sox need to wait until Tuesday to call up the left-handed slugging first baseman in order to maintain his rookie status for 2023.
