Frank Ocean's Big Green Bag Won Paris Fashion Week

For all the stunt outfits and piled-on grails we saw on front-row attendees during the men’s shows in Paris last week, one simple series of looks stole the spotlight away from everyone: new GQ cover star Frank Ocean in some blue jeans, a puffer jacket, and one big green bag. Frank is good at this; his low-key, intensely personal style is hard-earned and battle-tested. But the hunter green leather tote (or as Vogue called it, “man bag”) Ocean wore to complete the outfit was the flex that drew the everyone in. Out dutifully tracked the bag back to Celine’s Fall 2017 collection, revealing that it’s no longer available for purchase (“a travesty”). But this whole thing has less to do with the greatness of this specific bag—which, again, is great; Phoebe Philo, the Celine designer behind it, can do no wrong—and more to do with the greatness of Frank Ocean. But you know all about that, right?.

From a style perspective, what makes Frank Ocean so magnetic, so worthy of writing about, is that he takes big, important swings without acting like a big, important showoff. Whether he’s wearing Vans to the White House or a political T-shirt on stage, he flexes loudly but he keeps it chill. When he dyes his hair pink, or wears sequin shorts, or, in this case, carries an expensive women’s handbag to a fashion show, he does it in such a “nothing to see here” way that you never feel trolled. He’s being true to himself and it makes you want to be true to yourself in return. And, sure, also consider the fact that stuffing everything you need for the day into four small pants pockets has never been entirely practical.
