Franklin boys and girls cross country teams win District 1-6A titles

The Franklin boys and girls cross country teams won District 1-6A championships on Friday at the Horizon Golf Course.

On the boys side, it was the program's first district championship. Franklin won with 27 points, 31 ahead of Eastwood. Five Franklin runners finished in the top 10, led by Diego Flores in third, Matthew Engle in fourth and Denovan Estrada in fifth.

"We ran great as a team, I am really proud of our kids," Franklin coach Anthony Laspada said. "To get as many kids in the top 10 as we did says a great deal about how hard the kids work."

Omer Ibrahim won the individual title with a time of 15 minutes, 53.81 seconds.

"It was a good win, I felt good and this gives me momentum going into the regional meet," Ibrahim said. "I feel healthy now and this is a race I needed."

Franklin won its fifth straight girls title with 26 points, 33 ahead of Eastwood. Emily Orr was second to lead the Cougars, which placed five in the top 10.

"We have good chemistry on the team," Orr said. "We were ready and we wanted to keep the tradition going."

Eastwood's Adelynn Rodriguez won the girls individual title with a time of 19:10.52.

"I didn't put any pressure on myself and I ran a good race," said Rodriguez, who qualified for state last year and finished in the top 10. "This win gives me some confidence and I'm excited for regionals to see what happens. My goal is to get back to state."

District 1-4A

In the girls competition, Riverside won the team title with 21 points behind winner Camila Luna, who won the race in 14:25.21. Her teammates Kim Castro and Paula Tapia were second and third. Luna edged Castro, who was second at 14:25.40.

"As a senior, it means the world to win the team title and individual title," Luna said. "We worked so hard for this championship. Everyone stepped up."

Riverside won the boys team title with 32 points, edging Austin, which scored 36. The Rangers placed four runners in the top 10. Kevin Perez was third with a time of 19:09.80.

Harmony Science Academy senior Jesus Herrera became the school's first individual champion by winning the district title in 17:31.09.

"I used to be a basketball player but figured out I was a better distance runner," Herrera said with a laugh. "I've been running consistent as the season winds down and I felt good out there. It was a tough race, but finished strong."

District 2-4A

San Elizario junior Kylee Pardo had never competed in cross country prior to this season. But Thursday she proved she had plenty of potential by winning the district title with a time of 13:55.19, edging teammate Katelyn Montoya, who ran 13:55.41.

"I have great support in this program," Pardo said. "My coaches, my teammates have helped me so much. Winning the team title was a great achievement for uss."

The San Elizario boys team won its ninth straight district championship by placing seven runners in the top eight. Chris Moreno won the individual title in a time of 17:20.92, followed by teammate Julian Guerra in a time of 17:34.21.

District 2-5A

Hanks won the girls title with 23 points with five runners in the top 10 led by Destinee Loeza in second and Elizabeth Aguirre in third. Del Valle's Valeria Loo-Kung won the individual title with a time of 21:30.40.

On the boys side, Parkland's Michael Castroena hasn't competed in cross country very long but he's a district champion as a senior, winning in 17:19.53.

"I started running in my sophomore year, finishing in the top 30," he said. "Last year I finished third and that gave me confidence. It was a goal to win district this year. I hope to have a great run at regionals and make state."

Bel Air won the team title with 52 points, nine ahead of Del Valle. The Highlanders had three runners in the top 10, led by Leonardo Resendez in fourth.

District 1-5A

The El Paso High boys won the district title with 26 points. Miles Westbrook won the individual title with a time of 16:21.57.

On the girls side, El Paso High and Canutillo each scored 36 points, but the Tigers were awarded first after their sixth runner finished higher than the Eagls sixth runner.

Gianny Correa of Chapin was the individual champion in a time of 19:36.58.
