Franklin boys and girls cross country teams qualify for state meet

Several El Paso high school cross country teams and individuals fared well at the Region I cross country meet Monday and Tuesday at Mae Simmons in Lubbock. Here is a look at the results. The state meet is scheduled for Nov. 4-5 in Round Rock.

Class 6A

The Franklin girls earned a trip to state by finishing third with 153 points, 13 ahead of fourth-place Plano West. Flower Mound won the Region I-6A title with 55 points one point ahead of Southlake Carroll.

Franklin was led by Emily Orr, who finished in 19th place with a time of 18 minutes, 53.06 seconds.

Eastwood's Adelynn Rodriguez was the top girls individual from El Paso, placing 12th with a time of 18:43.1, which earns her a trip to the state meet.

The Franklin boys are also headed to state after finishing fourth with 124 points, two back of Prosper. Southlake Carroll won the team title with 25 points and Coppell was second with 101 points.

Matthew Engle led Franklin with a 10th place showing in a time of 15:48.4. Coronado's Luis Pastor won the regional title with a time of 15:09.7 and Pebble Hills' Omer Ibrahim was third with a time of 15:23.3.

"I'm really proud of both teams," Franklin coach Anthony Laspada said. "The boys team is going to state for the first time and the girls are going as a team for the third time in six years. It's great to see the hard work pay off, the kids have really done a nice job all season."

Class 5A

Canutillo's Natalie Rivera is headed to state as an individual qualifier in the girls competition and will be making her first trip to the state meet. She finished 22nd overall with a time of 20:00.7.

"I have run this course before and I just felt more confident this time around," Rivera said. "I was determined to make state. This is an amazing feeling to achieve this. It's something I worked hard for and I gave it everything I had."

On the boys side, Hanks' Alejandro Tarin is headed to state for the fourth straight year after finishing third with a time of 15:07.9. The third-place finish is his best at the regional meet after finishing 16th in 2021 and 16th as a sophomore.

"I felt good out there and this is my best chance to medal at state," Tarin said. "This year I took the sport more seriously and I want to run at the college level and because of that I wanted to make a statement this year. I'm really happy with the third place finish."

El Paso High is sending two runners to state, Miles Westbrook and Leo Valenzuela. Westbrook placed 14th with a time of 16:18.5 and Valenzuela was 17th with a time of 16:22.5.

Class 4A

The San Elizario boys will have a chance to repeat as state champions after finishing third behind Big Spring and Canyon. Canyon won the team title with 24 points, Big Spring was second with 71 points and San Elizario was third at 73. Sanger is headed to state as well after finishing fourth.

San Elizario's Christopher Moreno won the individual title with a time of 15:37.1. Harmony Science Academy will have its first runner make the trip to state as Jesus Herrera finished 12th with a time of 16:41.1.

San Elizario is headed to the state meet as a team for the ninth straight year.

"Christopher ran a great race," San Elizario coach Cesar Morales said. "He was pushed hard by the competition and responded."

Class 3A

On the boys side, Tornillo will send three individuals to the state meet, Angel Torres, Daniel Romero and Bryan Castaneda. Torres finished second with a time of 15:58.9, Romero placed third at 16:14.4 and Castaneda was 14th with a time of 17:09.5.

On the girls side, Tornillo's Kylene Elias is headed to state after placing fifth with a time of 12:41.2.

"Kylene ran great and I think with good work in the next several days, she can reach the podium at state," Tornillo coach Jesse Garcia said. "The three boys who made state ran great and gave us a great effort."

Immanuel Christian finds success at TCAF state meet

The Immanuel Christian boys and girls cross country teams found success at the TCAF state cross country meet in Haltom City last weekend.

Junior Israel Quintana finished second on the boys side with a time of 17:13.83 and Abel Velasquez finished eighth at 19:33.90.

On the girls side, Danielle Nelson finished 18th with a time of 16:55.78 and Sidney Brito was 20th with a time of 17:01.32.
