Franklin Park Zoo lion makes full recovery from pneumonia, officials say

Wildlife officials announced on Friday that a local zoo’s beloved lion has recovered after experiencing serious health issues last month.

Kamaia, an African lion at Franklin Park Zoo, was successfully treated for pneumonia and has rejoined his brother, Dinari, in their outside habitat, according to Zoo New England.

The latest picture of Kamaia taken on Thursday shows the king of the jungle belly up, basking in the sun.

“We are encouraged that Kamaia’s condition has improved and he is acting normally,” said Dr. Chris Bonar, Director of Animal Health for Zoo New England.

Officials say the 14-year-old lion may still have some underlying chronic issues, but comprehensive diagnostics tests have thus far been inconclusive.

“For now, his condition remains guarded though we are cautiously optimistic with the remarkable progress we’ve seen thus far,” Dr. Bonar said.

Kamaia and his brother have both resided at Franklin Park Zoo since 2015.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
