Highlights of German football icon Franz Beckenbauer's career as player and coach. His family said on Monday that he died Sunday at age 78.

1972: Six years after losing the World Cup final there, Beckenbauer leads West Germany to a first-ever victory at Wembley over England, 3-1 in the Euro 1972 quarter-finals. The team named by experts as the best German side ever goes on to win a first continental title 3-0 over the Soviet Union in Brussels.

1974: West Germany overcome a shock 1-0 group stage defeat against East Germany to win the title 2-1 over the Netherlands. The Munich final is also the duel of arguably two of the best players at the time, Beckenbauer v Johan Cruyff. Gerd Müller scores the winner to allow captain Beckenbauer to lift the trophy.

1977-1980: Beckenbauer leaves Bayern after more than a decade of vast success for New York Cosmos for a then record transfer fee of $2 million. He plays alongside Brazil legend Pele and wins three US titles but also said: "You can forget it from a footballing point of view."

1990: After six years as national team coach, and the lost 1986 final, Beckenbauer joins Brazil's Mario Zagallo - who died last week - as the then only man to win the World Cup as a player and coach, 1-0 over Diego Maradona's Argentina. The images of Beckenbauer wondering on his own over the Rome pitch are legendary. He later explained that "it was the only place where I had peace and quiet."

2006: Beckenbauer brings the World Cup to reunified Germany as bid committee and organizing committee head. The tournament does wonders to the image of the country, but the title goes to Italy after a semi-final win against the Germans. Many years later Beckenbauer is at the centre of dubious payments around the tournament. The case is later closed because of statute of limitations.
