A local chapter of a fraternity will offer food to homeless people on Saturday.

Who is it?

The Gastonia-Shelby chapter of the fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, does annual service projects, alternating between Cleveland and Gaston counties, said organizer Anthony Felder.

The projects involve "just giving back," Felder said. "So we volunteered (at) food banks. We have different drives throughout the year for the homeless, so this year we decided to do feeding the homeless here in Gaston County."

Where is it?

The group will offer bagged lunches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at 310 E. Long Ave., Gastonia.

"We have different types of sandwiches that we'll serve out to them. Each bag will contain those sandwiches plus chips, cookies," Felder said.

Health Net Gaston also will have workers on site to hand out hygiene kits, and emergency workers will be present to offer blood pressure checks.

Off-duty police officers from the Gaston County Police Department also will be on site to "try to bridge the gap between the community and police department."
