Fraud In Nutley: Facebook Messenger|FedEx Delivery|Dental Plan

NUTLEY, NJ — Nutley residents reported more incidents of fraud last week, an ongoing issue in the township, authorities said.

In one case, the victim allowed a person to withdraw $4,000 from their credit union account when she claimed to be having financial problems due to the coronavirus crisis, authorities stated.

According to the Nutley Police Department, which has repeatedly issued warnings about such schemes, the following incidents were recently reported in the township.

June 13 – “The victim stated they received a FedEx delivery notice to their email that advised of a delivery to be completed today. The victim had not ordered anything and checked their American Express account which showed a charge from Google in the amount of $1,097 for a Google Pixel phone and ear buds. Upon checking their Google account they tracked the delivery with the FedEx tracking number which indicated the package was being delivered in Phillipsburg, NJ, to an address not familiar to the victim.”

June 15 – “The victim stated they received a call from a health care company advising that someone attempted to open a new dental plan using the victim’s social security number and other pertinent information. The heath care company opened an investigation regarding the matter. The victim notified their financial institution and will be monitoring their three major credit scores with the appropriate companies.”

June 18 – “Headquarters received a report of fraud. The victim stated that they began chatting on Facebook Messenger with a woman named ‘Sandra Joseph’ approximately five months ago. Recently, Ms. Joseph asked for a monetary favor. She claimed that due to the pandemic she was not able to obtain money. Additionally, she sent images proving she was in fact who she claimed to be and was genuine. The victim supplied her with their personal account information for their credit union, along with the password. The bank contacted the victim to advised them that $4,000 had been withdrawn from their account.”
