Fred McGriff to speak at Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte HSSA on May 24 at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune is proud to announce Fred McGriff as the special guest speaker at the 2022 Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte High School Sports Awards at 7:30 p.m. on May 24 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The show is produced with support from Lakewood Ranch.

More than 200 high school athletes from across the Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte area will be honored. The show will also name players of the year for more than 20 sports and include several major awards, including overall Players of the Year, Teams of the Year, Coaches of the Year and a Courage Award.

“I’m honored to host the Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte Area High School Sports Awards this year," said Fred McGriff, former MLB All-Star and world champion. “These student athletes never cease to amaze me with their hard work and dedication, and I'm proud to be a part of recognizing and honoring their accomplishments."

McGriff is a Tampa native and played from 1986-2004 in the Major Leagues, including from 1998-2001 and 2004 with the Tampa Bay Rays. He finished with 493 home runs, leading the American League in 1989 and the National League in 1992. He won a World Series title in 1995 with Atlanta and was a five-time All-Star.

The Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte High School Sports Awards is part of the USA Today High School Sports Awards program, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.
