Freddy's Casa Manana goes up in flames

The old Freddy's Casa Manana building on Old Iowa Park Road burned late Monday afternoon.

The Wichita Falls Fire Department got the call at 4 p.m. and quickly called for a second alarm after finding flames and smoke pouring from the abandoned building. The blaze appeared to be under control shortly before 5 p.m.

More than 20 fire, police and sheriff's units arrived on the scene. No injuries were reported.

Assistant Fire Marshal Eddie Mawson said an official cause had not be determined, but said the fire may have been started by vagrants.

He said the building was owned by the city and had been slated for demolition. An adjacent building also sustained damage.

The Mexican food restaurant sat near the intersection of Old Iowa Park Road and Sheppard Access Road, just across the street from the Pioneer # 3 Restaurant.

It became a bar for a short time after Freddy's closed, but has apparently been vacant for several years.

This Casa Manana is not the same as the landmark restaurant in downtown Wichita Falls which has remained in business since shortly after World War II.
