Frederick County to hold hazardous waste drop-off event

Nov. 1—The Frederick County Division of Solid Waste and Recycling will hold a drop-off event this weekend for residents looking to safely dispose of household hazardous materials.

To participate in the event, residents can bring household hazardous materials to Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday. The event will be held rain or shine.

The drop-off site will be in the upper parking lot of the stadium. People are encouraged to enter from New Design Road as opposed to South Market Street.

The Frederick County government is bringing in a contractor licensed to handle hazardous materials for this event.

Examples of acceptable materials include pool chemicals, household and automotive cleaners, brake fluid and pesticides.

Examples of unacceptable materials include medicines and medical sharps, firearms and ammunition, biohazardous waste and regular trash and recycling.

Commercial or out-of-county hazardous materials will not be accepted. People should bring an ID showing a Frederick County address or a utility bill as proof of residence.

Paul Varga, a spokesperson for the Division of Solid Waste and Recycling, said the hazardous waste drop-off events are held twice yearly. More than 800 cars worth of hazardous waste was dropped off during the last collection in July.

Residents can consult the comprehensive hazardous waste list on the Division of Solid Waste and Recycling website at frederickcountymd.gov/3958/Household-Hazardous-Wastes to find out whether a certain item can be dropped off at the event on Saturday.

More information on disposing of materials not accepted at regular drop-off events can be found on the event flyer at tinyurl.com/fredctyhazardouswaste.
