The Port Huron Museums will once again offer free admission to its visitors to its sites — and the access isn’t limited to city residents.

The city of Port Huron previously backed free admission for a program in 2022 through earlier this year. According to a news release, the re-upping of the effort is designed to bring in tourist dollars to the region and is being funded through a grant with $50,000 from the city, $25,000 from the Blue Water Convention and Visitors Bureau, and $1,000 from Semco Energy.

It became effective on Friday.

“We are very proud to be able to offer this access to the area’s shared cultural heritage,” Andrew Kercher, the museums’ community engagement manager, said in a statement. “Not only will this be great for locals, the free admission will attract visitors and dollars from outside the Blue Water Area.”

The admission applies to all visitors at three of the museum sites, including the Thomas Edison Depot Museum, the Huron Lightship, and the flagship Carnegie Museum downtown.

The museum’s fourth site, the Fort Gratiot Light Station, is run in conjunction with the St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Department.

Its grounds are freely accessible, however, guided tours of on-site buildings, including climbing the lighthouse tower, still requires admission, which is $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors.

There is free admission for veterans and museum members.

"While this initiative offers free admission to all of our visitors, we will be ramping up our membership perks, including member appreciation events and free program,” Executive Director Veronica Campbell said in a statement. “We appreciate our members, and their support goes to support the museums in all programming and exhibitions we create for our community. We are happy to make the museums accessible to all and look forward to another stellar year.”

Kercher later added that the reinstated free admission on applicable sites will be in place at least a year.

“It’s a little more open-ended. I think there is a chance it will be reviewed and extended,” he said. “But we’re going to be reviewing it after a year.”
