Jul. 17—Jackson County Fair organizers hope that a free bus shuttle to the fair Saturday will prevent the Expo parking lot from overflowing as it did Friday night.
The free shuttle will run between the Crater High School parking lot at 655 N. Third St. to the Expo starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 17, with the last shuttle departing the fairgrounds at midnight.
Jackson County Expo director Helen Funk said she called staff at the Central Point and Eagle Point school districts "official cape-wearing superheroes" for making the shuttles possible at the very last minute.
"I gave them all the reasons to say no, and they found a way to say yes," Funk said. "That's a really big deal."
Funk said she called the school districts at 9 a.m. Saturday morning after overflow crowds at the fair Friday night filled parking lots to the brim and spilled over on Peninger Road and to businesses down the road.
Funk estimated early Saturday afternoon that Friday night's crowd was about 20,000 people, but called it "fuzzy math" while she awaited official attendance numbers. She expects similar crowds Saturday.
Georgia singer, songwriter and rapper Colt Ford performs at 7 p.m. Saturday at the fair. For the full schedule, see attheexpo.com.
