Wawa lovers rejoice: a new location just opened in Boynton Beach.

The combination gas station and convenience store has more than 15 locations in Palm Beach County, and the newest store at 2505 W. Woolbright Road welcomed visitors for the first time Thursday morning.

Wawa's mascot, Wally Goose, joined customers at the celebratory opening — complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and confetti. That celebration will continue with free coffee for all customers through April 2, a tradition when the chain opens new locations.

Just last month, Wawa opened a new store in West Palm Beach and another in suburban Lake Worth Beach. They added to a rapidly expanding network of about 1,000 stores between Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The chain also has plans to break ground in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, "with more details on those new locations to be shared soon," Wawa said in a news release.

Here are some other quick facts about Wawa:

  • Why do the stores use a goose as their logo? Before it became a food retailer, the company ran a dairy farm in rural Wawa, Pa. And "Wawa," according to the company, is a Native American word for the Canada Goose that was found in the Delaware Valley more than 100 years ago.

  • Most of the modern stores offer gasoline, along with hoagie sandwiches, burgers, breakfast items and a variety of hot, cold and frozen drinks.

  • The chain employs more than 35,000 people, including about 40 people at the new location in Boynton Beach, which is led by general manager Michael Katze.
