The Smith Island Art League will hold a members' show and sale 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28 at the Bald Head Island Association Center, 111 Lighthouse Wynd, Bald Head Island. The show is open to the public with free admission. The Art League members will show a variety of styles and mediums such as ceramics, oil and watercolor paintings, cards, jewelry, fabric art, photography and more.

Adult Spelling Bee

Spell milieu. In 1985 it was one of the hardest winning words that were asked in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The 33rd annual Adult Spelling Bee, hosted by the Brunswick County Literacy Council, will be held on Tuesday, May 23.

The spelling bee, one of the literacy council’s most popular event, will be held 7-9 p.m. at Odell Williamson Auditorium, 150 College Road, NE, Bolivia. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Participants will compete in teams of twos of leaders, businesses, community groups, churches, nonprofits, educational institutions, music groups, sports teams and more.

The event will also feature a silent auction, live music. Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served.

A $5 donation goes toward funding for the Brunswick Literacy Council's programs.

Back Porch Rockers

A free riverfront concert, hosted by the Friends of the NC Maritime Museum at Southport, will feature the Back Porch Rockers, a rock 'n' roll band which plays a variety of music.

The benefit concert will be held Thursday, May 25 on the Garrison Lawn at Fort Johnston-Southport Museum & Visitors' Center, located at 203 E. Bay St. in Southport.

The event will feature a raffle for various items and gift certificates donated by local businesses.

Participants can bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets, and of course, wear comfortable dancing shoes.

Proceeds donated or collected will help support the NC Maritime Museum at Southport.

Oak Island concert series

The Oak Island "Bands by the Beach" concert series will kick off with the Blackwater Band playing beach music. The free concert will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, May 26 at the Middleton Park Amphitheater, 102 SE 47th St.

Ocean Isle Beach Summer Concert

The Tonez will kick off the Ocean Isle Beach Summer Concert, also known as the Peggy Hughes Concert Series, Friday, May 26. The band will be playing beach, dance and rock music, 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday, May 26 at Town Center Park, 11 E Second St. Free.

National Poppy Day

The John E. Jacobs American Legion Post #68 will hold its annual Poppy Drive, Friday, May 26. The red poppy, a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I, honor those who served and died for this country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.

Poppies will be handed out at three locations in Leland: Piggly Wiggly, 112 Village Road, N.E.; Whistle Express Car Wash, 2040 Olde Regent Way; and ACE Hardware, 117 Village Road, N.E.

Donations will be accepted.

Holden Beach Concert Series

It's time to boogie once again at the Holden Beach Concert Series. Kicking off the series will be The Extraordinaires playing R&B and classics, 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, May 28 at the pavilion under the Holden Beach Bridge. Refreshments available for purchase. Bring a chair or beach towel. Free. 910-842-6488.
