Free COVID-19 tests are back. Here's how to order yours and check for extended expiration dates

Ordering COVID-19 tests from the government is back and you can now place your order for four free tests. If you still have expired COVID-19 tests lying around at home, do not dispose of them just yet as some expired home test expiration dates have been extended, including ones you may receive in the mail.

How to order the free COVID-19 tests

Every U.S. household can order four COVID-19 rapid tests through the official government site COVID.gov. The tests and shipping are free, so no insurance or payment information is required to place an order. The tests will be shipped straight to your home and delivered via USPS.

Upon placing your order, you will receive an order confirmation from USPS. Once the tests are shipped, a tracking number and expected delivery date will be sent. Orders will start shipping the week of Oct. 2.

How do I know if my COVID-19 test's expiration date has been extended?

Some COVID-19 test expiration dates have been extended by the FDA and a list on their website has been updated to reflect which ones have been extended.

The tests you receive in the mail may show expired dates on them so be sure to check the list for their new expiration dates.

Has the COVID-19 testing protocol changed?

The CDC recommends that anyone who has COVID symptoms test immediately and anyone who has been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 to wait five full days after exposure before testing, even if you are not experiencing symptoms.

As previously covered by IndyStar, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended earlier this month people aged 6 months and older receive an updated COVID-19 vaccine to help prevent sickness or hospitalization. Making testing more accessible is another way the government is working to slow the spread of COVID-19.
