According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests happen outside a hospital each year. UCHealth said in a sudden cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating normally, the pulse disappears, and a person stops breathing, chest compressions keep the blood circulating until paramedics arrive.

“CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival, so bystander intervention is critical,” said Lisa Meyers, the Chest Pain Center coordinator for UCHealth Memorial Hospital. “Without immediate help, cardiac arrests are often fatal. We want—and need—people to act and know what to do in a cardiac emergency.”

The American Heart Association said Hands-Only CPR has shown to be as effective in the first few minutes after cardiac arrest as conventional compression and breaths CPR.

However, UCHealth said conventional CPR requires more in-depth training. The American Heart Association said less than 46% of people receive immediate help for cardiac arrest before professional help arrives. Mark Warth, medical program coordinator for the Colorado Springs Fire Department said local stats are lower with bystander CPR initiated only 40% of the time.

“We urge everyone to consider attending one of the two free upcoming trainings,” Warth said. “If you are needed in an emergency, you will have the necessary skills to help save a stranger or someone you love—a spouse, parent, or friend.”
