A Northern Kentucky restaurant is celebrating Argentina's 2022 FIFA World Cup victory with free empanadas.

The Empanada's Box in Covington will give away free empanadas and house-brewed Yerba Mate, an herbal tea native to South America, starting at 11 a.m. on Friday, said Diego Nunez, one of the restaurant's co-owners, in a press release.

What's an empanada? On the restaurant's website, Nunez, an Argentinian native, describes an empanada as the perfect finger food. An empanada is a type of baked turnover consisting of pastry and filling, common in different styles around the world.

No purchase is necessary, and each customer can receive one free Buenos Aires empanada and a cup of Yerba Mate while supplies last.

“We are so proud of Argentina and Lionel Messi for bringing the World Cup back home to our country,” Nunez said in the statement. “We thought, what better way to celebrate than by inviting everyone in Cincinnati to try an authentic dish from Argentina.”

The Empanada’s Box specializes in authentic Argentine-style empanadas that are inspired by global flavors. The company's Buenos Aires empanada is filled with seasoned ground beef and modeled after the city's most popular empanada flavor.
