A free fitness facility is coming to York, SC. Here’s how it will get people moving

New grant money will pay for a new kind of fitness option in York. One that anyone in that area can use -- free of charge.

“We are excited to bring the fitness court to this growing community,” said city parks and recreation director Chris White. “One of the most significant benefits that the fitness court will provide is free access to fitness equipment for people who may not be able to afford a gym membership or have access to fitness equipment.”

York applied for a $30,000 grant in February to partner with San Francisco-based National Fitness Campaign for a new fitness court. The city got the grant in March. The partnership will bring a more than 2,000-square-foot fitness area to the York Recreation Complex. It will have a seven-movement, full-body workout setup with core, squat, push, lunge, pull, agility and bend components.

The recreation complex at 74 4th St. also puts the free fitness court both at a known gathering spot for city residents and an easy connection with the city’s bicycle trail system for people who might ride or walk there.

According to its website, National Fitness Campaign aims to fund 5,000 outdoor fitness courts across the country by 2030. The organization offers a variety of city and school grant options. The York fitness court will be one of only two of its kind in South Carolina. Generations Park in Aiken has one. Two more fitness courts in this region are at Veterans Memorial Park in Charlotte and Chestnut Square Park in Indian Trail.

While a grant will fund the park, York will offer a variety of naming rights for the facility and its features to raise additional funding. City officials expect an early 2024 opening.
