Free lunch in Modesto? Here’s who qualifies for the school district’s summer program

The Modesto City Schools district is offering free weekday lunches to youth and teens this summer, beginning Friday and continuing through July 28.

People ages 1 through 18 are qualified for the Summer in the Parks Program. There are no income guidelines, registration or identification requirements, according to the district.

A child must be present to receive a meal, Nutrition Services Senior Director Criss Atwell said.

“Access to nutritious food is still important when school is not in session,” the district said in a Facebook post.

Here’s the menu, and where you can pick up the lunches:

Weekly menu

All lunches are served with a choice of: 1% unflavored milk, nonfat chocolate milk, seasonal fruit, fresh vegetables and condiments, according to the district. All breads are whole grain.

  • Monday: Grilled cheese sandwich

  • Tuesday: Turkey and cheese sandwich with garden salsa Sun Chips

  • Wednesday: Chili cheese hot dog

  • Thursday: Twin cheeseburgers

  • Friday: Italian cheesy pull-aparts with a brookie

The weeks of May 29 and June 12 will have a different Friday menu. The meal on these days will be a soy butter kit, a nacho kit and a brookie.

Park locations and times

The free lunches will be distributed at 22 parks and other locations throughout the school district. All sites will be closed for holidays on June 19 and July 4, according to the district.

Atwell said the United States Department of Agriculture also requires all meals given out to be eaten in the park where the meal was received.
