HOLLAND — Mister Car Wash has officially opened off 16th Street in Holland.

The franchise broke ground in April at 594 E. 16th St. after receiving administrative approval from the city in 2021 for the location in front of Menards. The 6,400-square-foot wash is the latest addition to a growing landscape, joining a new Quality Car Wash location on North Park Drive in Holland Township.

The national brand has 29 locations in Michigan, but Holland is the first along the lakeshore. The business, according to the Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce, is offering free platinum express washes through Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Mister Car Wash is open 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays, according to the company's website.

The local sentiment over the growth of car washes in Holland in 2021 and 2022 has risen to almost meme-like proportions. Facebook pages filled with residents have similar comments on posts about development, housing, and new and closing businesses: "When's the next car wash?" "It'd be better as a car wash." "What we really need there is a car wash."

Mandi Brower, president of Quality Car Wash — based in Holland — said, during COVID-19 shutdowns, car washes often weren't considered essential — except for those used to clean emergency vehicles.

That led to many washes closing permanently, most of which were independently owned, according to a 2021 article from the U.S. Census Bureau. Now that pandemic restrictions have lifted and businesses are able to operate normally, demand for car washes has shot back up — and the ongoing developments are mostly franchises.
