Burlington Free Press staff writer Alex Abrami has been selected as Vermont's co-sportswriter of the year, the National Sports Media Association announced Monday afternoon.

Abrami, who also won the award in 2014, 2018 and 2020, was chosen in a vote among his Vermont peers, beating out the Free Press' Jacob Rousseau on the final ballot. Abrami shares the honors with first-time winner James Biggam of the Barre-Montpelier Times Argus.

In total, fifteen BFP staffers have won the award since its inception in 1959.

Abrami is a staple in the Vermont sports landscape and has presided over the University of Vermont basketball beat for 10 seasons and has been a member of the Free Press sports department since 2007. Most recently, Abrami followed the UVM men's soccer team to Syracuse, New York, where it lost in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament and the men's basketball team's run to Buffalo for the opening round of March Madness. He is a graduate of St. Michael’s College (2004) and Rice Memorial High School (2000), where he played soccer and ran track and field.

The Vermont sportscaster of the year award went to WCAX-TV's Jack Fitzsimmons for his first NSMA honor.

Abrami, Biggam and Fitzsimmons are three of 116 state-level honorees from around the country to be recognized at the NSMA's 63rd awards weekend, which will be held June 24-26, 2023, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Along with state winners, the event will celebrate ESPN's Lee Corso and Los Angeles Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke, who will be inducted into the NSMA Hall of Fame. Corso and Plaschke are joined by two posthumous electees, hockey announcer Dan Kelly and essayist Roger Angell.

CBS Sports' Ian Eagle has been voted the national sportscaster of the year, while Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Pete Thamel of ESPN.com share the national sportswriter of the year award.
