Every year the Times-Union gets several calls and emails asking when is the next free shredding day in Jacksonville. Well, this year that day is Saturday.

And again this year it will include a free tree giveaway.

Keep Jacksonville Beautiful, Greenscape, Republic Services and the city are making it all happen for America Recycles Day. This weekend's event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Parking Lot E at the TIAA Bank Field, 1680 E. Adams St.

It will be drive-thru service in which people can drop off up to two 30-gallon bags or boxes of paper documents for longtime sponsor Republic Services to haul off for shredding.

People can also pop open their trunks if they'd like one of the 2,000 trees being offered on a first-come, first-served basis as part of the city’s Arbor Day celebration. Crepe myrtles, winged elms, hollies, oaks, bald cypresses, red maples, river birch and chaste trees will be given away in 3-gallon-sized containers.

Alpha Beta Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Sorority also will be volunteering at the event.

Organizers expect to collect several tons of old documents and other paper materials to be securely disposed of for recycling and to help avoid identity theft.

Next up: Household hazardous and electronic waste

The city's Solid Waste Division also is offering a free household hazardous and electronic waste mobile collection event on Nov. 19. It will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ed Austin Regional Park, 3450 Monument Road.

Residents can take items such as chemicals and small appliances to be properly disposed.

Here some of the items than will be accepted:

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

• Pesticides, pool chemicals or any other type of chemicals or acids

• Car parts, antifreeze, motor oil** or used oil filters

• Gas, propane, kerosene or diesel fuel/tanks

•  Fireworks, flares, fire extinguishers, gun powder or ammunition

• Drain cleaners, paint**, varnish, shellac, thinners or strippers

• Thermometers or thermostats

• Car batteries or rechargeable batteries

• Fertilizer

• Aerosol cans

• Fluorescent lights/tubes/bulb

** Oil and paint are limited to 27 gallons

E-WASTE

• Televisions and radios

• Computers and printers

• Stereo equipment

• VCRs and DVDs

• Camcorders

• Phones and pagers

• Power tools

• Small kitchen appliances

• Health and beauty appliances

Residents also can dispose of such waste year-round at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 2675 Commonwealth Ave., Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
