Freehold Raceway Mall fire started in shoe store

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - A fire at Freehold Raceway Mall was put out Friday morning, according to officials.

Around 8:14 a.m., Freehold Township police officers responded to a reported fire at Sole Culture — a shoe store located in the mall — according to Christopher Swendeman, a spokesperson for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

Following investigations, the fire is believed to have started due to an accidental mechanical malfunction, Swendeman said. There are no suspicious circumstances, he said.

Sole Culture suffered damage to its inventory, along with several other businesses, due to smoke and water, according to Swendeman. There were no injuries.
