Freeman woman bit 17 times by group of four pit bulls, dogs sought: Police

The Freeman police are actively searching for four dogs who attacked a Freeman woman early Monday morning, authorities said.

Jay Slevin, a Freeman police officer, responded to a complaint of aggressive dogs around 6:25 a.m. Monday, he said. While on his way to the scene, an emergency call came through on his radio of a dog attack at the community center.

A 55-year-old woman was found at the scene and had been attacked simultaneously by four pit bulls. She had 17 dogs bites, Slevin said. She was treated at a local hospital and released later in the day.

The owner of the four pit bulls, Dawson Schild, already had the dogs inside the house when Selvin arrived, he said. Schild refused to "surrender the animals."

Selvin said he had to wait for backup, and Schild escaped out the back door with the animals. Police believe Schild took the dogs to a friend's house in Sioux Falls.

The Freeman police have had previous issues with the animals but "nothing like this," Selvin said.

Sioux Falls Animal Control and the Sioux Falls Police Department are assisting in trying to locate the dogs. Selvin is also asking for the public's help in trying to find the dogs.

Descriptions of the dogs are below:

  • Fog (neutered male): 1.5-year-old labrador-retriever pit bull mix. Brindle in color.

  • Onxy (neutered male): 3-year-old pit bull. Black in color.

  • Francie (intact female): 1.5-year-old labrador-retriever pit bull mix. Brindle in color.

  • B.B. (spayed female): 7-years-old pit bull. Blond in color.

Schild faces charges of keeping and maintaining vicious animals, dogs running at large and disturbing the peace.
