Freeport-area teacher faces third round of child pornography charges

A teacher/athletic coach in Dakota has been charged with child pornography charges for the third time this month.

Daniel Sheets, 37, of Dakota, was arrested in the 100 block of South Elm Street in Davis Junction, Illinois on Wednesday.

The Stephenson County Sheriff's Office said Sheets was charged with five counts of child pornography and five counts of unauthorized videotaping. All of the additional charges allegedly happened in July 2019.

Sheets was first arrested on three counts child pornography, unauthorized videotaping charges on Aug. 2. A day later, Sheets was charged with nine additional pornography charges.

Authorities began investigating Sheets after he was placed on administrative leave July 11 by the Dakota School District.

The school district's report said a teacher/athletic coach was "believed to have engaged in inappropriate communications with multiple female students."

As of Thursday, Sheets was being held in the Stephenson County Jail on a $500,000 bond in which 10 percent applies. The Stephenson County Sheriff's Office said Sheets was out on bond on the two previous felony warrants.

The investigation is still ongoing.
