The freezing fog advisory that was issued for several southeastern Wisconsin counties has been lifted

Monday morning's freezing fog advisory that was issued for several areas of southeastern Wisconsin inland from Lake Michigan has been lifted, according to the National Weather Service in Sullivan. There remains potential for freezing fog to return Monday night.

The freezing fog advisory was originally expected to expire at noon Monday.

Milwaukee, Ozaukee and Sheboygan counties were removed from the advisory at 6 a.m. The advisory was lifted for the remaining counties under the advisory around 8 a.m. That included Fond Du Lac down through Dodge, Washington, Waukesha and Walworth, as well as inland portions of Racine and Kenosha.

"There's still some patchy fog lingering, specifically in southcentral Wisconsin," said weather service meteorologist Taylor Patterson. "Madison, Janesville, Sauk City might still have some lower visibility ... But, the dense fog and the freezing fog has lifted."

After the fog clears, the rest of the day will be mostly cloudy, according to weather service meteorologist Cameron Miller. Highs in the Milwaukee area will be around 40 degrees.

What is freezing fog?

"You have dense fog, so low visibilities coupled with below freezing temperatures," Miller said.

With dense fog, there are a lot of water droplets, he explained. When those droplets hit below-freezing surfaces, they can freeze.

"You can get some slick spots on untreated surfaces," he said.

Sometimes, with the freezing fog, ice crystals — "which are basically snow" — can form, he said. But, this "snow" would be very light, fine and intermittent. And, there wouldn't be accumulation, he noted.

There's potential for freezing fog overnight, gradual warm up expected this week

Fog is expected to start rolling into the Milwaukee area and surrounding counties once again around 8 p.m. Monday with a potential for more freezing fog overnight, according to Miller.

Over the next couple of days, temperatures will gradually warm up across the state, Patterson said.

"With our high temperatures climbing, so too will our low temperatures," Patterson said.

Lows Tuesday into Wednesday will be right around to above freezing. Wednesday into Thursday, lows will be in the 40s, she said.

Most of the state will see highs in the 50s on Thursday.
